Owosso News and Muse

We don’t really deal in breaking news per se, but we like to think about what is happening and what has happened in Owosso that makes it such a charming and sometimes complex place. If you’re looking for local sports or obituaries, this isn’t going to fit the bill. But if you’re trying to wrap your mind around how one of the most pro-abolition communities in Michigan survived being targeted by hate, played key roles in winning the Civil War, and became home to a huge population of Irish and Mexican people who pioneered life in a cold and beautiful place so far from home, making and losing fortunes, winning and losing elections, fighting for what is right and preserving that legacy, well, you might find what you’re looking for. Maybe. We’re a town that got knocked around and is still here, now flying rainbow flags and running warming stations for the unhoused and showing up when it matters. We like to explore the past in the context of the present, and vice versa. Is that news? I guess that depends on what we discover looking forward and backward.

Generations of Owosso children took swimming lessons there over more than five decades. The pool was named for Grove Holman, a beloved teacher and coach…
