Era: 1926-1964
Location: East Howard Street off South Washington Street
In 1926, Ross Waffle and Elmer Schluckbier, employees of the Borden Farm Products Company, became managers of Owosso Belle Isle Creamery. They were the first to advertise perfectly pasteurized milk.
For the next 25 years, an expansion program of house-to-house delivery continued until Borden service covered all of Shiawassee County.
Over the years, the horse and wagon finally gave way to the motorized milkman stand up and drive dairy truck.
However, due to the beginning of supermarkets, the invention of disposable milk cartons, and rising labor costs, in 1964 Borden closed and demolished their building on East Howard Street.
Thanks to Art Thompson, Borden longest employee (1932-1964), for this story and for recognizing fellow workers Charlis Hunt, Vince Pariseau, Bert Noonan, and Alex McLaren.
