H.M. Post Hardware stood at 902 West Main Street—the current location of Barrister Brewing Company.
Hiram M. Post was born in Shiawasseetown in 1850 and moved to Owosso from Vernon in 1885. He was a tinsmith—sometimes known as a tinker or tinner.
Unlike blacksmiths who work with hot metals, tinsmiths do most of their work on cold metal, fabricating items such as water pitchers, forks, spoons, and candle holders.
Tinsmiths learned their craft through a 4-6 year apprenticeship with a master tinsmith. After completing their training, they became journeymen, often taking to the road as peddlers. By 1893, Hiram Post had succeeded in opening his own shop.
