Owosso Elks Lodge No. 753: A Community Gathering Place

Era: 1901-1973
Location: Southeast corner of Washington and Mason Streets

In 1901, the Owosso Elks Lodge No. 753 was organized, beginning over seven decades of fraternal fellowship in the community.

In 1904, the club purchased the old Merell House, which had been one of Owosso earliest hostelries until 1899.

The Lodge became woven into the fabric of Owosso life: The Friday night stroganoff was legendary. Family chicken dinners brought generations together. The top floor hosted senior dances, including one memorable event featuring the Gene Burner Band. Wedding receptions celebrated new beginnings.

Adjacent to the Lodge stood the HiSpeed Service Station, owned and operated by Don Mitchell.

Sadly, in 1973, after nearly seventy years of service, the building was torn down to make way for a parking lot.

Memories shared by Harold Jenkinson, Chris Ross Michels, JimPaula Storrer, John Cannon, Sandy Bukovick Lueker, Rick Mowen, and others.
