Alvin M. Bentley I, born in 1858 in Orleans County, NY, had two sons: Calvin P. Bentley (1883-1964) and Alvin M. Bentley II (1894-1918). Alvin II died overseas in WWI.
Calvin became president and general manager of the Owosso Mfg. Co. when his father died in 1917 and successfully carried on the vast interests his father held—including being one of the largest stockholders of General Motors and a member of the GM Board of Directors.
Calvin married Irma Brewer in 1907—the same year the Argus reported that the couple was occupying their beautiful new home at 621 West Oliver Street.
In 1969 the house became the home of the YWCA. A large addition was built on the back and a parking lot along the river. Later still, Baker College occupied the building.
