History

The Newton House and Hemenway Sanitarium

Era: 1858-1908
Location: 318 Michigan Avenue

The impressive Newton House was built c.1858 by George F. James at 318 Michigan Avenue as a boarding house for travelers stopping at the newly created Grand Trunk train station at the south end of the avenue.

By 1908, the same building had been transformed into the Hemenway Sanitarium. Hiram F. Hemenway, who advertised as a doctor in the treatment of cancers, may have run the Sanitarium for less than a year. He died November 8, 1911 after an illness of four years.

Same address, same building—transformed over 50 years.
