The Washington Street Bridge Opens

Era: June 30, 1972
Location: Washington Street Bridge

The Washington Street bridge was lined with people on June 30, 1972, when the lead car in a parade of antique vehicles from the Great Lakes Old Car Club broke the official gold ribbon and opened the bridge after 10 long months of construction.

Riding in the lead car, driven by Terry Raatz, was Dr. Leon Montague, Mayor of Owosso.

The celebration marked the end of a construction project that had tested the patience of downtown businesses and residents alike—and the beginning of a new era of connectivity across the Shiawassee River.
